Exotic species may need specialist diet, space, temperature, social structure, enrichment, licensing or veterinary care. If those needs are not understood, welfare can collapse quickly.

Primates in particular are not comparable with common small pets. They are intelligent, social, complex animals and are not appropriate casual purchases.

• Is it legal and licensed?
  Check current law before ownership.
• Can you meet the adult needs?
  Do not buy based on baby appearance.
• Is a specialist vet available?
  Unusual animals may need specialist care.
• Can you provide social needs?
  Some species cannot live well alone.
• Can you afford lifelong care?
  Exotic care can be expensive and long term.

What Owners Often Get Wrong

The common mistake is confusing fascination with suitability. Wanting an animal does not mean you can meet its needs.

Another mistake is believing a seller who says an exotic pet is easy. Ask what happens when the animal is mature, noisy, stressed, ill or difficult.

When Welfare Is Already At Risk

If an exotic animal is being kept illegally, unsafely or in poor welfare conditions, seek advice from the correct authority or welfare organisation. Do not attempt risky handling yourself.
