95 Animals Found In One Home: The Guinea Pig Breeding Lesson Every Family Should Read

From the counter at Paradise Pets – July 2026
Neil has sold and advised on guinea pigs at Paradise Pets Swindon since 1988. Recent reports of 95 animals found in one home are upsetting, but they also carry a practical lesson every family should understand before buying guinea pigs.

When a news story says dozens of animals were found in one home, people often think: “That could never happen to us.”

Most of the time, they are right. But the early mistakes that allow animal numbers to grow are much more ordinary than people realise. A pair is bought without reliable sexing. A hutch is “temporary.” Vet care is delayed. Breeding is not prevented. Cleaning becomes harder. Then the situation grows beyond what the owner can manage.

Recent coverage of an RSPCA prosecution reported 95 animals, including 73 guinea pigs, found in poor conditions. I do not want to dwell on distressing details. I want to focus on the lesson: guinea pig ownership must be planned properly from the start.

“The first welfare decision with guinea pigs is not the colour, age or price. It is whether you truly know their sex, space needs, companionship needs and long-term care cost.”

Why Guinea Pig Numbers Can Get Out Of Control

Guinea pigs are social animals and usually need companionship. That does not mean families should buy without planning. The RSPCA says guinea pigs are social, active animals with specific diet, environment and company needs.

One of the biggest risks is wrong sexing. Young guinea pigs can be difficult to sex correctly, and even sellers can make mistakes. If males and females are housed together, breeding can happen quickly.

Once babies arrive, owners may underestimate how soon separation, sexing, space and rehoming decisions matter.

Guinea Pig Numbers

The Family Mistake I See Too Often

The common mistake is treating guinea pigs as easy starter pets for children.

They can be wonderful family pets, but the adult is always responsible. Children can help, but they cannot be expected to manage sexing, diet balance, dental concerns, vet decisions, enclosure hygiene and breeding prevention on their own.

Guinea pigs need hay, vitamin C, clean housing, space, gentle handling and regular checks. They also need a plan if the pair does not work, if one dies, or if health issues appear.

Neil’s Guinea Pig Buying Checklist

Ask before bringing guinea pigs home
  1. Are you certain of the sex?
If not, wait or get experienced help. Do not guess.
  2. Do you have enough space?
Guinea pigs need room to move, hide, feed and rest without crowding.
  3. Do you understand companionship?
They are social, but pairings still need thought.
  4. Can you afford ongoing food and bedding?
Hay, vegetables, pellets, bedding and cleaning products are not one-off costs.
  5. Can you afford vet care?
Guinea pigs can need veterinary treatment, including dental or skin care.

Warning Signs A Setup Is Becoming Too Much

  • Cleaning keeps being delayed
If bedding is regularly wet, dirty or smelly, the setup is not under control.
  • You are not sure who is male or female
    This must be fixed quickly.
  • Animals are sharing because there is nowhere else
Lack of backup space is a real welfare risk.
  • Vet care is being postponed
Small health issues can become serious.
  • More animals arrive without a plan
Loving animals is not enough if the care plan is missing.

What To Do Before Buying

Prepare the enclosure first. Learn the diet. Understand that hay is essential. Know how often cleaning will happen. Decide who is responsible every day. Ask where the guinea pigs came from. Ask how old they are. Ask how their sex was checked.

If buying for children, make sure an adult wants the responsibility too. A guinea pig is not a short-term toy or a summer-holiday project.

If You Already Have Too Many

Do not wait until things become desperate. Speak to a vet, a reputable rescue or an animal welfare organisation. Separate males and females if breeding is possible, but get experienced advice so you do not cause fighting or stress.

The responsible step is asking for help early.

Neil’s Honest Advice

A good guinea pig home is not complicated, but it must be consistent. Space, sexing, company, diet, cleaning and vet care are the foundations.

If a family cannot confidently answer those questions, they should pause before buying. Waiting is better than rushing into a welfare problem.

Best Bird Shop Around

April 29, 2026

It’s the best pet shop in and around Swindon. They always have an amazing selection of birds and all you need to keep them happy. I keep birds myself and the guys there are happy to answer questions and really know their stuff. I have seen budgies etc. in chain pet shops in the area looking really unhealthy and ill – I wouldn’t go anywhere else than Paradise Pets for animals.
