A Cheap Cage Can Become The Most Expensive Pet Mistake

From the counter at Paradise Pets – August 2026
With pet costs under pressure, it is tempting to save money on the cage or hutch. Neil explains why that can backfire.

A cheap cage can look like a bargain on day one. The trouble starts when it is too small, hard to clean, badly placed, unsafe, or unsuitable for the animal’s normal behaviour.

Owners then buy upgrades, deal with stress problems, replace broken parts or struggle with hygiene. The cheap option becomes the expensive option.

“The cage is not furniture. It is the animal’s world.”

Why This Is Getting Attention Now

As pet owners pay closer attention to costs, setup decisions matter more. Saving in the wrong place can increase welfare risk.

For birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, space and layout shape daily life.

Spacious cage for small pets

The Quick Owner Check

  • Size
Can the animal move naturally, not just fit inside?
  • Cleaning
Can you clean it properly without dreading the job?
  • Safety
Are bars, gaps, doors and materials suitable?
  • Enrichment
Is there room for perches, hides, toys or exercise?
  • Future
Will it still work when the animal is adult?

What To Do Today

Before choosing the cheaper cage
  1. Price the full setup
Include bedding, bowls, toys, hides and cleaning items.
  2. Ask about adult needs
Do not buy only for baby size.
  3. Check cleaning access
If cleaning is hard, hygiene will slip.
  4. Think location
The cage must fit a safe place in the home.
  5. Buy once if possible
A suitable setup often saves money later.

What Owners Often Get Wrong

The mistake is comparing cages only by price. Compare by welfare, cleaning, durability and suitability.

Another mistake is assuming an online photo shows scale honestly.

When This Becomes Urgent

If a pet is injuring itself, chewing unsafe materials, escaping, fighting cage mates or showing stress behaviours, review the setup quickly.

If there is injury or illness, call a vet.

Neil’s Honest Advice

Neil’s advice is to choose the setup you can live with and clean properly. Welfare depends on what happens every day, not just the day you buy it.

A good cage makes good care easier.

Great Quality Hutch

May 1, 2026

Bought a guinea pigs hutch and run combo, very happy with the service, the hutch was put in my car for me without even asking for help. The wood quality is very good, the instructions easy to follow and we are extremely happy with the fully built hutch. A good size for 2 guinea pigs

Best Bird Shop Around

April 29, 2026

It’s the best pet shop in and around Swindon. They always have an amazing selection of birds and all you need to keep them happy. I keep birds myself and the guys there are happy to answer questions and really know their stuff. I have seen budgies etc. in chain pet shops in the area looking really unhealthy and ill – I wouldn’t go anywhere else than Paradise Pets for animals.
