Guinea Pig Heat Checks: The Rear-End Detail Owners Avoid

From the counter at Paradise Pets – August 2026
In hot weather, guinea pig care is not only about water and shade. Rear-end cleanliness can become a serious welfare issue.

Nobody enjoys checking the messy end of a guinea pig. But in summer, avoiding that check can be dangerous.

Flystrike risk rises when animals are dirty, damp, unwell or unable to clean themselves properly. Owners need to look, not guess.

“The check owners avoid is often the check the pet needs most.”

Why This Is Getting Attention Now

Blue Cross and RSPCA summer advice highlights flystrike risk for rabbits and guinea pigs in warm weather.

Guinea pigs can also suffer heat stress, so checks should include both body condition and environment.

The Quick Owner Check

  • Rear end
Look for wetness, droppings, smell, soreness or eggs.
  • Bedding
Keep bedding clean, dry and changed often.
  • Weight
Overweight or unwell guinea pigs may struggle to clean themselves.
  • Flies
Reduce flies around housing and food waste.
  • Eating
A guinea pig that stops eating needs quick attention.

What To Do Today

Twice-daily summer check
  1. Morning look
Check food, water, bedding and the rear end.
  2. Afternoon shade
Make sure shade still covers the run or housing.
  3. Evening clean
Remove wet bedding and spoiled food.
  4. Handle gently
Support the body properly when checking.
  5. Call a vet
If you see maggots, wounds or serious soiling, call immediately.

What Owners Often Get Wrong

The mistake is assuming indoor guinea pigs cannot get flystrike. Indoor pets can still be at risk if flies enter and hygiene slips.

Another mistake is checking only the food bowl and not the animal.

When This Becomes Urgent

Maggots, wounds, severe diarrhoea, refusal to eat, collapse or weakness are urgent veterinary situations.

Do not try to solve flystrike at home.

Great Quality Hutch

May 1, 2026

Bought a guinea pigs hutch and run combo, very happy with the service, the hutch was put in my car for me without even asking for help. The wood quality is very good, the instructions easy to follow and we are extremely happy with the fully built hutch. A good size for 2 guinea pigs

Best Bird Shop Around

April 29, 2026

It’s the best pet shop in and around Swindon. They always have an amazing selection of birds and all you need to keep them happy. I keep birds myself and the guys there are happy to answer questions and really know their stuff. I have seen budgies etc. in chain pet shops in the area looking really unhealthy and ill – I wouldn’t go anywhere else than Paradise Pets for animals.
