Blue-Green Algae Alerts: Why Dogs Should Never Swim In Suspicious Summer Water

From the counter at Paradise Pets – July 2026
Blue-green algae alerts have appeared in UK news during the summer. Neil explains the dog-safety rule owners should follow around lakes, ponds and slow water.

If water looks suspicious, do not let the dog swim, drink or lick it from the coat afterwards.

Recent council and local news reports have warned about blue-green algae at several UK water sites during warm weather. The risk is especially relevant when owners travel or walk dogs near lakes and ponds.

Even if your main pets are birds or small animals, many Paradise Pets customers also keep dogs. Summer water safety is one of those simple rules that can prevent a frightening emergency.

“With blue-green algae, the safe choice is boring: keep the dog out.”

Why Blue-Green Algae Is A Summer Risk

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that are dangerous to dogs. Warm, still water can be a risk, and blooms are not always easy for owners to judge confidently.

The danger is not only swimming. Dogs may drink the water or lick contaminated water from their coat.

Warning Signs Around Water

  • Green, blue-green or paint-like scum
Do not treat unusual surface colour as harmless.
  • Warning signs at the site
Follow council or landowner notices immediately.
  • Still, warm water
Ponds and lakes can be higher risk in hot weather.
  • Dead fish or wildlife nearby
Leave the area and keep pets away.
  • Dogs trying to drink
Carry clean drinking water on walks.

Neil’s Summer Walk Water Plan

Before walking near lakes or ponds
  1. Check local notices
Look for council warnings before travelling.
  2. Keep the lead on near suspect water
Do not rely on recall at the edge.
  3. Carry clean water
Thirsty dogs are more likely to drink unsafe water.
  4. Rinse if exposed
Ask a vet for advice if exposure may have happened.
  5. Act quickly after symptoms
Vomiting, weakness, seizures or collapse need urgent veterinary help.

What Owners Often Get Wrong

Owners often think clear water is always safe and green water is always obvious. In reality, if you are not sure, keep the dog away.

Another mistake is letting dogs swim first and checking signs later. Check the site before the dog reaches the water.

When To Contact A Vet

If your dog may have swallowed contaminated water or starts vomiting, drooling, staggering, fitting, collapsing or acting very unwell after water exposure, contact a vet urgently.

Neil’s Honest Advice

A missed swim is not a welfare problem. A toxin exposure can be.

Choose safer walks, carry water and take warning signs seriously.
