A budgie on the cage floor is one of the signs owners often search in a panic. Sometimes it has a simple cause, but it should never be dismissed.
Healthy budgies usually prefer perches. If a bird that normally perches starts sitting on the floor, the owner needs to ask why. It may be tired, scared, injured, weak, egg-related, overheated, cold or unwell.

If the bird is alert, moving normally and exploring the floor briefly, it may not be urgent. If it stays low, looks puffed, struggles to perch or seems weak, act quickly.
Floor-sitting plus reduced appetite, balance trouble or breathing changes should be discussed with a qualified vet.
What Can Be Normal
Some birds briefly go to the floor for dropped food, toys, curiosity or bathing dishes.
Young birds may also be clumsy while learning, but they should still look bright and able to move.
What Is Not Normal
A budgie sitting still on the floor, fluffed up or unable to perch can be seriously unwell.
A bird hiding on the floor may be trying to conserve energy.

Offer a low safe perch and see whether the bird can step up normally. - Check feet and legs
Look for obvious injury, swelling or weakness without rough handling. - Check breathing

Best Bird Shop Around
It’s the best pet shop in and around Swindon. They always have an amazing selection of birds and all you need to keep them happy. I keep birds myself and the guys there are happy to answer questions and really know their stuff. I have seen budgies etc. in chain pet shops in the area looking really unhealthy and ill – I wouldn’t go anywhere else than Paradise Pets for animals.
