Pets Can Overheat While Resting: What Indoor Bird And Small-Pet Owners Should Check Today

From the counter at Paradise Pets – July 2026
Neil has watched UK summer pet-care mistakes from the counter at Paradise Pets Swindon since 1988. One of the most important lessons is that pets do not have to be running around outside to overheat.

Many owners understand the danger of dogs in hot cars. Fewer people think about a bird sitting in a hot living room, a hamster in an upstairs bedroom, or guinea pigs in a warm indoor cage.

But during a heatwave, resting indoors is not automatically safe. A room can hold heat. A cage can sit in a sun patch. A hutch can have shade but no airflow. A carrier can become hot during a short journey. A small pet may become quiet rather than obviously distressed.

That is the point I want owners to hear today: check the environment before the pet looks unwell.

“A pet does not need to be running, walking or trapped in a car to be affected by heat. Sometimes the danger is a warm room, poor airflow and an owner who thinks resting means safe.”

Why Resting Pets Can Still Be At Risk

Heat affects the environment around the animal. If that environment becomes too warm, still or exposed, the pet may struggle even while doing nothing.

The BVA warns that vets see heat-related illness in hot weather. The RSPCA, PDSA and Met Office all advise owners to take heat precautions for pets, including shade, water, ventilation and regular checks.

Birds and small animals are easy to overlook because they may be indoors and quiet. But quiet is not always comfortable. Quiet can also mean stress, weakness or the start of illness.

Indoor Checks For Bird Owners

For budgies, cockatiels, canaries and other cage birds, cage position matters. Do not place the cage in direct sunlight through a window. Do not put the cage in a conservatory or room that traps heat. Do not assume a covered cage is cooler.

Birds also need fresh water, airflow and a stable environment. A sudden blast from a fan can stress a bird, but a hot, still room is not good either. Keep the cage in a cooler, well-ventilated room where the bird has shade and is not exposed to fumes.

Watch for open-mouth breathing, wings held away from the body, unusual stillness, weakness or collapse. If you are worried, contact a qualified vet.

Indoor Checks For Small-Pet Owners

  • Check the actual room temperature
Upstairs rooms and closed bedrooms can be hotter than owners realise.
  • Move cages away from windows
Sun through glass can make a cage uncomfortable quickly.
  • Refresh water often
Bottles and bowls can warm up during the day.
  • Check enclosed hides
Some plastic hides and tubes trap warmth.
  • Keep bedding clean and dry
Dirty bedding becomes a bigger welfare issue in warm weather.

Neil’s Today Check

Do this before the hottest part of the day
  1. Stand beside the cage or enclosure
If it feels hot, stuffy or stale to you, take it seriously.
  2. Look at where the sun will be later
A safe position at 10am may not be safe at 3pm.
  3. Check water, bedding and airflow
These basics matter more in hot weather.
  4. Watch behaviour
A pet that is suddenly quiet, weak, drooling, breathing fast or not eating needs attention.
  5. Move early, not late
Prevent heat stress before the animal is struggling.

Which Pets Need Extra Care?

Older animals, overweight animals, very young animals and pets with existing health problems may struggle more. Rabbits and guinea pigs can be at risk in hutches and runs. Hamsters and gerbils can be affected in hot rooms. Cage birds can become uncomfortable in direct sun or poor airflow.

The specific setup matters more than the species label. A well-positioned cage in a cooler room is safer than a poor setup outside or beside a window.

What Not To Do

Do not plunge a small pet into sudden cold conditions. Do not put animals directly in front of a strong fan if it causes stress. Do not soak bedding. Do not leave a carrier in a hot car or bright sun. Do not wait for collapse before phoning a vet.

Cooling should be calm, gradual and sensible unless a vet gives emergency instructions.

Neil’s Honest Advice

In hot weather, I would rather an owner over-check than under-check. Look at the cage position, water, airflow and behaviour. If something feels wrong, act early.

The pets that worry me most are not always the dramatic cases. They are the quiet ones in hot rooms that nobody has checked properly since morning.

It’s the best pet shop in and around Swindon. They always have an amazing selection of birds and all you need to keep them happy. I keep birds myself and the guys there are happy to answer questions and really know their stuff. I have seen budgies etc. in chain pet shops in the area looking really unhealthy and ill – I wouldn’t go anywhere else than Paradise Pets for animals.
